Candle in the wind

String Kelp (Macrocystis pyrifera) frond.

In the early nineteen seventies, Macrocystis was harvested for alginates. The company ceased operating after a few years due to a shortage of kelp and low prices for alginates. The processing plant was based at Louiseville between Triabunna and Orford, on Tasmania's East Coast. Very little of this alga is now found due to warming of Tasmania's East Coast waters and concurrent lower nutrient levels.
